In the Ultimate Fighting Championship we’re used to seeing some strange match-ups from time to time but every now and then, that can lead to an entertaining end product from the fans’ point of view.
The last couple of months have seen rampant speculation regarding who Nate Diaz will take on in what is expected to be the final fight of his current UFC deal. The popular opinion would be for him to wage war with an old rival like Conor McGregor or Jorge Masvidal, but as per a leaked shot of UFC’s summer plans, it seems like they may have been edging toward the idea of him facing off against Khamzat Chimaev.
‘Borz’ is well known for being one of the fastest rising stars in the recent history of the UFC and because of that, many expected him to walk through Diaz if the fight was to happen.
No official announcement came to leave the future of the match-up uncertain, but according to Dana White in a recent interview, there are still plans in place to get these two warriors together.
“It is [something we’re still talking about].
“No no no [not during International Fight Week], in the future. That’s a fun fight. You’ve got Khamzat ranked number three in the world, him and Diaz would be fun. Leon Edwards is next for Usman, Colby and Khamzat would be fun, I mean, we’ll see how this thing plays out.”
The Chimaev effect
This is a favourable fight for someone like Khamzat Chimaev and in equal measure, you could argue it’s a bit of a step down after he was able to defeat Gilbert Burns earlier this year.
If he wants to carry on with his quest to attain the UFC welterweight title then there would be no better way to seal the deal than by knocking off Colby Covington.
Still, with the star power that Diaz possesses, he may not even need to go down that route, as Leon Edwards’ upcoming showdown with Kamaru Usman proves.
