Who is the greatest coach of the modern era?

It's an interesting topic to consider and one that if you were going to try and decipher then assessing how many wins a coach has would be an important step.

Obviously it doesn't tell the whole story. Certain coaches have had the luxury of consistently managing the best teams rather than working their way up and so naturally would be more likely to have more victories.

It's fair to say that we've probably seen that with the likes of Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti. Two managers that finished their playing careers and were fast-tracked into the top jobs thanks to their well received reputation.

But nevertheless, they still had to execute when in that position.

How do they compare, though, to the likes of Jurgen Klopp who had work his way up the managerial ladder at clubs like Mainz before securing a job with Borussia Dortmund?

Well, thanks to transfermarkt, we can tell you exactly how.

Managers with the most wins in the 21st century (Europe's top five leagues)

10. Diego Simeone: 596 games / 349 wins
9. Manuel Pellegrini: 762 games / 387 wins
8. Unai Emery: 770 games / 413 wins
7. Rafael Benitez: 833 games / 439 wins
6. Jurgen Klopp: 811 games / 454 wins
5. Sir Alex Ferguson: 725 games / 471 wins
4. Jose Mourinho: 897 games / 557 wins
3. Pep Guardiola: 759 games / 563 wins
2. Arsene Wenger: 1002 games / 588 wins
1. Carlo Ancelotti: 1003 games / 611 wins

It's a testament to the longevity of Ancelotti and Wenger that they have both managed over 1000 games each, and so it's no surprise that the two top the list with Ancelotti edging out Wenger by 23 victories.

Incredibly, Guardiola is right on their tale despite having managed nearly 250 games less than the old timers! His spells of dominance at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City really shines through.

Mourinho just misses out on a podium, whereas Ferguson would have topped the list with his miraculous tally of 895 victories if we had taken the 20th century into account.

Klopp's role in re-building clubs has meant that his total number of wins is considerably lower than some of his counterparts.

Whereas Atletico's Simeone sneaks into the final placing with his 349 club victories.
