Blizzard announced Sunday that Overwatch 2 will be released as a free-to-play game on the 4th October 2022.

The launch of the hero-based shooter is being dubbed as an early access release for the Overwatch 2 player-versus-player component and will include at least two new heroes, Sojourn and Junker Queen to the Overwatch roster.

Reports suggest that Junker Queen is a high-mobility tank with a shotgun and an axe from Junkertown, as she is the commander of the Australian-based arena, which also serves as a map in the game. With her addition and Doomfist’s reassignment, the tank role now has a healthy 10 heroes.

The game is still in early access and has only the player-versus side of things available at the moment as there is no player-versus environment yet.

A simple one to begin with, we beg you know this – otherwise I’d just stop here.

However, the fact that Overwatch 2’s player-versus-player is completely free, regardless of whether you own the first game, is a huge plus for games.

Blizzard also revealed cosmetics for some of the cast in the announcement trailer, including previously unseen changes to D.Va and Symmetra. Blizzard has stated that more information about Overwatch 2 will be revealed in a separate stream on the 16th of June.

Blizzard’s president, Mike Ybarra, stated in a press release: “This is the start of the franchise’s always-on, always-evolving era, and a recommitment to serving players with frequent and substantial updates planned well into the future to keep Overwatch 2 fresh and fun for many years to come.”

Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 will be released in October for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The game will allow for cross-platform play and progression.
