Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany is reportedly on the verge of becoming the Championship's newest manager with the Belgian primed for the hot seat at Burnley.

The Clarets have been on the hunt for a new permanent boss since parting company with Sean Dyche back in April.

Caretaker replacement Mike Jackson oversaw a brief upturn in form, but ultimately couldn't save Burnley from relegation to the English second-tier.

Former Anderlecht boss Kompany is the man the Lancashire side have identified as their top candidate for the vacant role - with The Mirror reporting that the 38-year-old could be unveiled as their new manager this week.

Bouncing back to the Premier League at the first attempt is a notoriously tricky task - made harder by the fact that a number of first-team players are expected to depart Turf Moor before the start of the new season.

January signing Wout Weghorst has already gone on record to state that he "won't be playing in the Championship" next season. He likely won't be alone, either.

Kompany, though, has never been one to shirk a challenge.

A fearsome competitor in his own career, four-time Premier League winner Kompany now demands those same high standards from the players he manages.

Last October, the ex-Man City captain launched into a furious expletive-laden rant after his Anderlecht side conceded a late equaliser to draw 2-2 at Sint-Truiden.

End of season quiz: How much do you remember about the 21/22 football campaign?

In explosive scenes captured for a fly-on-the-wall documentary, Kompany left no doubt as to how much winning means to him.

Flinging a water bottle across the dressing room in frustration, Kompany shouts: "Listen, no misunderstanding, there's one f*****g side of me you haven't f*****g seen boys.

"Number one - whether we play with three, four, five or six [in defence] it's my f*****g decision. And I take the responsibility if we lose and if we don't perform well."

While Kompany was seemingly fuming with every member of his team, he took particular issue with the body language of on loan Bayern Munich striker Joshua Zirkzee.

"The second thing. Zirk, last time I talked about your attitude you came up with only a f*****g smile.

"But I need that attitude. You were no good, just like all the others. I could have taken off anybody, without anyone complaining.

"Today we deserved to lose anyway. We can be f*****g happy with one point. Ninety-five minutes we just wasted time. You wasted your time, I wasted my time.

"It was better not to come. It was better to send the U21s."

Watch: Vincent Kompany slams his Anderlecht side in furious rant

Kompany's completely lost his head at his squad here - and that's after they've come away with a 2-2 draw. We can only imagine his response if they'd actually suffered defeat.

Generally accepted as one of the toughest leagues on the planet to achieve success in, Burnley can't afford any passengers during the 2022/23 Championship season - and, based on the above, Kompany won't be tolerating any player with that sort of mindset.

A serial winner during his previous stint in England, Kompany was honoured by Man City with his own statue outside the Etihad Stadium.

For all he's achieved in the past, though, restoring Burnley's Premier League status at the first time of asking would be an incredible accomplishment for Kompany in his relatively young managerial career.
