The USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers pulled off the perfect trick play during their recent defeat to the Philadelphia Stars.

The USFL, which stands for the United States Football League, is something of a developmental league for the National Football League, with players using it as a middle-ground before what could hopefully become their chance in the NFL.

The league itself is a reboot of the league that was launched in the 1980s as a spring league to offer football throughout the year and was rather successful before it tried to compete against the NFL by playing in the autumn before eventually folding after just three seasons.

It features a number of players who are out of college who didn’t quite get their shot in the big time, whilst also providing those who did, such as Paxton Lynch a 2016 1st round pick for the Denver Broncos who now plays for the Michigan Panthers a second chance to prove that they belong.

The league season is coming into its final stages, with the playoff teams confirmed with a week of the season still to play, but that hasn’t met that there isn’t still some exciting play on the field.

Going out with a bang

One team who have had a far from stellar season is the Pittsburgh Maulers, who have only managed to win one game so far this season and who were pretty much eliminated from contention pretty early on during the proceedings.

But that doesn’t mean that they can’t still have some fun whilst they are out there, as they proved this past weekend against the Philadelphia Stars. With nothing to lose from the game, they decided to pull out all of the tricks out of their bag, and that included an impressive fake field goal.

With the scores tied at 3-3 in the second quarter, holder Max Duffy flipped the ball up to kicker Ramiz Ahmed who in turn threw the ball into the endzone where linebacker Malcolm Howard was waiting to run it in for a touchdown:

It would ultimately be in vain as they would lose a tight game 17-16, but it might just be enough to catch the eye of a number of NFL teams who might look to incorporate something similar into their own team this season.

And who knows, maybe they’ll look to these three to try and make it happen.
