Serena Williams has confirmed on Instagram that she will play at Wimbledon this year.

The 40-year-old has not played competitive tennis since last year’s Wimbledon Championships but teased earlier this year that she’d feature at the All England Club this summer.

Williams, who is currently ranked outside the world’s top 1000,  was not named on the original entry list for the ladies' singles main draw but has revealed she will be at SW19 this year in some capacity.

“SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022 See you there. Let’s go #renasarmy,” she wrote on her Instagram.

While the former world number one will definitely be playing in some capacity, she is yet to clarify whether she will play singles, doubles or both.

Williams could have been granted a wildcard to play in the ladies' singles, though Wimbledon are yet to announce which players have been offered spots in the main draw.

Equally, there is every chance Williams could choose to focus on doubles with sister Venus, or even play mixed doubles instead.

Back in 2019, Serena teamed up with Britain’s Andy Murray in the mixed event and reached the last 16.

The American also gave another cryptic clue to her return by tagging WTA 500 Eastbourne in her post.

The LTA have now confirmed that Williams will take part in the women's doubles at Eastbourne and partner Tunisia's Ons Jabeur.

If Williams does play in the singles at Wimbledon, she will be vying for an eighth title at the All England Club.

Having claimed her first title 20 years ago, her last triumph came in 2016 when she beat Germany’s Angelique Kerber in straight sets.

Victory for Williams this time around would see her notch her 24th Grand Slam title overall and equal Margaret Court’s all-time record.

Williams has been trying to catch Court for the last five years but has lost four major finals during this time.

Her last Slam final came at Wimbledon in 2019, where she lost to Romania’s Simona Halep.
