Rangers' ability to offer regular football and the opportunity to play in Europe could give them the edge in the race to sign Cameron Archer, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is hoping to bolster his attacking options ahead of next season and his side have been linked with the highly-rated Aston Villa youngster.

What's the latest news involving Archer?

According to talkSPORT, Rangers are interested in signing the striker this summer, but face competition from the likes of Middlesbrough, Watford, QPR and West Brom, while Preston are keen on re-signing Archer following his loan exploits last season.

Archer scored seven goals for Preston last term, which came after he had already racked up 13 for Aston Villa's first-team, Under-23s and Under-18s, including hat-tricks against Barrow in the Carabao Cup and Wycombe in the EFL Trophy.

Furthermore, the impressive young striker, who was described as having an 'abundance of talent' by Preston manager Ryan Lowe, has continued his goalscoring spree on the international stage by netting four goals in his first four appearances for England Under-21s.

As a result, there's still competition for Archer's signature, but O'Rourke reckons the lure of playing in Europe and getting regular game-time could improve Rangers' chances.

What did O'Rourke say about Archer?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Rangers will be hoping that regular first-team football and the chance to play European football might give them the edge over several Championship clubs who are also keen on him."

Can Rangers convince Archer to join?

The Championship is an extremely competitive division and with so many offers, Archer is likely to consider staying in English football, especially after proving himself on loan at Preston.

But as O'Rourke mentioned above, with Rangers' options limited up front, Van Bronckhorst's side could offer the youngster a great chance of regular football.

Not only is Amad Diallo back at Manchester United, but Alfredo Morelos' future remains in serious doubt with 12 months left on his deal, meaning Rangers could be short in attack by the time the new season gets underway.

Furthermore, the lure of potentially Champions League football might be too hard for someone as young as Archer to decline.

Rangers will still have to navigate their way through two qualifiers before they can officially say they're back in the Europe's elite competition, but the prospect of any level of European football would be an incredible proposition for someone of Archer's inexperience.
