Perhaps no player in the modern era has been as polarising as Paris Saint-Germain's Brazilian superstar Neymar.

The 30-year-old's incredible talent has been undeniable from the moment he first burst on to the scene as a youngster.

While playing for two of European football's biggest clubs, Neymar has enjoyed plenty of success - and is even on the verge of smashing a significant record for his country.

Despite having had a career that few could hope to match, Neymar's detractors insist that he should have achieved more during his time in the game.

In response to critics who label the Brazilian as overrated, the folks over at COPA90 have put together a Twitter thread of evidence to show that Neymar is actually underappreciated - and it's quickly gone viral.

We've taken a look at thread in full below. In truth, it's tough to argue with some of the points made.

Neymar: An underappreciated genius?

Starting with a review of his early career, the thread begins: "Huge noise was coming out of Brazil about this young, skinny, audacious guy with a mohawk. He’d soon captivate the world with his unique style of play. The first internet-hyped sensation, his highlights were reaching millions of views on YouTube.

Puskas Award winner 2012

"He quickly became Brazil’s new poster boy. Most wonderkids leave Brazil as teenagers, he stayed until he was 21. Won six trophies and scored 100 goals by the age of 20. And *that* Puskás Award winner. Had no right to do that, my word it was special.

Much-hyped move to Europe

"His move to Europe was inevitable. Like with many iconic Brazilians of the past, it just had to be Barça. 57,000 came to his unveiling at the Camp Nou and that set the tone for his tenure. He’d go on to reach global superstar status.

Exceptional at 2014 World Cup before injury cruelly ended his tournament

"The 2014 World Cup in Brazil was Neymar’s first major international tournament. The pressure was so big it felt like carrying the whole nation on his back at just 22. He was brilliant but famously suffered a terrible back injury in the QF against Colombia.

Ruled Europe as part of 'MSN' at Barcelona

"His time in Catalonia was a huge success. Together with Messi and Suarez, he was taking liberties on a weekly basis and scored a total of 105 goals. At Barça, Neymar won every single trophy possible including a historic treble and a domestic double.

No World Cup glory, but healthy success elsewhere with Brazil

"Despite WC disappointment, his international career has seen glory. Won the Confed Cup and Olympic gold scoring a combined total of 8 goals including a winning penalty in the Rio 2016 final. In 3 home international tournaments, he netted 12 goals.

A record-breaking move to PSG

"Neymar shocked the world by moving to PSG. The most expensive transfer in history, €222m. He transferred his blistering Barcelona form to Paris but injuries at the business end of a number of seasons prevented him from really shining bright on the world stage.

One match away from a sensational 'clean sweep' in 2019/20

"Still, he delivered his usual joyful football and swept the domestic trophies. In 19/20 he was a UCL final away from winning all possible 5 trophies in one campaign. In total, he managed to amass 160 G/A in just 144 games in all competitions, truly mind-blowing numbers.

100 goals for three clubs in three different countries

"Neymar's one of only 3 players to score 100+ goals for 3 different clubs. He'll end up as the top scorer for the most successful international team. If his career was to finish today, he'll still go down as an all-time great. He deserves more respect."

Neymar celebrates a PSG goal

Granted, he hasn't managed to lead Brazil to a World Cup triumph or PSG to the Champions League trophy, but Neymar's personal trophy cabinet is still absolutely stacked with honours.

He's not finished, either. Barring something pretty disastrous, Neymar will surely find the four international goals he needs to beat Pele's all-time record and become the Selecao's most decorated goalscorer ever.

Neymar may yet achieve his fairytale ending and raise the World Cup for Brazil. However, even if his career came to a halt today, his legacy would still be a pretty significant one - despite what some of his critics would like you to believe.
