When it comes to sport, money is one of the most discussed topics in the industry.

How much a footballer earns a week and what kind of prize pots are available at tennis Grand Slams are just a couple of frequently asked questions.

Pay parity is also a bigger talking point than ever, with many female professionals pushing for equality with their male counterparts.

But the reality is that very few women make up the list of the richest sportspeople on the planet. In fact, according to Celebrity Net Worth, out of the top 50 richest athletes, only two are women.

The highest earning sportswoman, and the world's only female billionaire athlete, is Anna Kasprzak.

The 32-year-old is fourth in the list, with a $1 billion net worth, behind former ice hockey and tennis player Ion Tiriac ($1.2bn), WWE chairman Vince McMahon ($1.8bn), and basketball legend Michael Jordan, who is the richest sportsman on the planet with a $2.2bn net worth.

Who is Anna Kasprzak?

Kasprzak is a Danish dressage rider who competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. Her best finish at the London Games was fourth place with Denmark in the team competition, while her best individual result was 14th in Rio.

She also won silver in the team dressage at the 2017 European Championships, but her second place finish is the extent of her medal list as a senior competitor.

Kasprzak did enjoy a rather successful junior career — winning four bronze medals at the European Young Riders Championships, as well as two bronze and one silver at the European Junior Championships. However, her form at youth level did not carry into her senior chapter.

Evidently, dressage success is not where her reported $1 billion net worth comes from.

Kasprzak's late grandfather Karl Toosbuy founded the Danish shoe manufacturer ECCO in 1963. Following his death in 2004, Kasprzak's mother and Toosbuy's only child Hanni inherited the business.

Hanni Toosbury Kasprzak is now the chairman of ECCO and has a reported net worth of $3 billion.

The company owns tanneries in China, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and Thailand and sells footwear ranging from suit shoes, to lace up trainers, and high heels.

With Kasprzak's family business, her gargantuan net worth makes her one of the world's youngest billionaires, alongside her brother André.

Who else is in the top 50 richest athletes?

Kasprzak is joined by just one other female figure in the Celebrity Net Worth top 50 richest athletes, however, there is quite a gap between the Dane and her fellow sportswoman.

Down at number 34 is tennis star Serena Williams with a $250 million net worth.

With 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her name, the queen of the court has enjoyed an unrivalled Open Era career but is also an incredible businesswoman.

Williams is the founder of Serena Ventures — a venture capital firm that raised $111 million earlier this year to fund early-age startup businesses.

Between her legendary career on the court and her business endeavours, Williams is one of the most marketable athletes and the highest-earning female tennis player in the world.

While Kasprzak's overall net worth makes her a billionaire, the majority of her fortune stems from the family business. Williams on the other hand, is knocking on the door of billionaire status through her sporting achievements and personal business ventures.
