Nine years after he first left Anfield, Jay Spearing has made a shock return to Liverpool.

A graduate of the club's youth academy, midfielder Spearing first joined the Reds at the age of 10. Eventually breaking into the senior side, he went on to make 55 appearances for the first-team, including a start in the 2012 FA Cup final.

Spearing would depart for Bolton the following year, before going on to represent Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Tranmere Rovers.

The 33-year-old's time at Prenton Park came to an end earlier this summer, but he's quickly found a new role as a full-time coach for the Liverpool U18s side.

As part of a statement confirming Spearing's second stint at the club, Liverpool revealed that their new coach would be "eligible to play for the U21s to provide experience to the young players."

However, while the club is certainly familiar to Spearing, the majority of the senior squad won't be.

Last making a first-team appearance for Liverpool on August 23 2012 during the reign of Brendan Rodgers, Spearing played 67 minutes of a Europa League qualifying play-off tie at Hearts.

It's no secret that current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has drastically transformed the club's fortunes since arriving at Anfield, but you really get a sense of just how far the Reds have come in the last decade when you look at the XI that Spearing was a part of in the final match of his first spell at the club.

GK: Pepe Reina

The Spanish shot-stopper departed the club after 396 appearances in August 2014.

Spells at Bayern Munich, Napoli, AC Milan and Aston Villa followed. Reina is currently at Lazio.

LB: Jack Robinson

Robinson's entire Liverpool career lasted a total of only 11 games.

The former England U21 international now plies his trade in the Championship with Sheffield United.

CB: Jamie Carragher

An Anfield legend, Carragher retired at the end of the 2012/13 season, having pulled on a Liverpool jersey an astonishing 737 times.

Now regularly seen winding up Gary Neville and Micah Richards in various television punditry roles.

CB: Daniel Agger

The former Danish international enjoyed 232 senior outings on Merseyside between 2006 and 2014.

He would hang up his boots two years later, going on to build quite the lucrative post-football career for himself.

RB: Martin Kelly

Kelly made 62 appearances for his hometown club, before leaving for Crystal Palace in 2014. He's still under contract at Selhurst Park eight years later.

DM: Jordan Henderson

The only player in this line-up who still calls Anfield home (prior to Spearing's comeback), current Liverpool captain Henderson has raised pretty much every trophy available to the Reds - with the ironic exception of the Europa League.

CM: Charlie Adam

Adam spent just over one season at Liverpool, making 37 appearances for the club. He did manage to win the League Cup during his short time with the Reds.

The midfielder now plays for boyhood club Dundee - and went viral for a truly shocking piece of simulation back in April.

CM: Jay Spearing

Replaced by Joe Allen with 23 minutes remaining at Tynecastle.

Allen left for Stoke in July 2016 - after 132 making appearances for Liverpool. He remains with the Championship club today.

LW: Raheem Sterling

For most that depart Liverpool, their career hasn't tended to go on an upward trajectory.

That's not the case for Sterling, though, who is very much the exception to the rule.

His move to Manchester City in 2015 proved to be a major success for the England winger. He's since gone on to win four Premier League titles at the Etihad Stadium.

RW: Jonjo Shelvey

Shelvey's three-season, 69-game spell at Liverpool didn't exactly blow anyone away. He moved on in 2013, signing for Swansea.

The six-time England-capped midfielder now represents Newcastle United in the Premier League.

CF: Fabio Borini

Liverpool's modern-day attack is an embarrassment of riches.

Even after parting ways with Sadio Mane and Divock Origi this summer, Klopp still has the likes of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and new signing Darwin Nunez to call upon.

Borini only managed three goals in 38 games for Liverpool, but did excel on loan at Sunderland, meaning the Anfield club still somehow recouped much of his £10.5 million purchase price.

The Italian currently plays for Turkish outfit Fatih Karagümrük.

For the record, Liverpool required an own-goal from Hearts' Andy Webster to emerge with a 1-0 victory on the night. Times really have changed significantly.
