Manchester United signing Inter defender Denzel Dumfries this summer is ‘a possibility’, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 26-year-old rose to prominence with his "incredible" displays throughout Euro 2020, earning a switch to San Siro from PSV Eindhoven but could be on the move once again over the coming months.

What is the latest news involving Dumfries?

A recent report from GOAL claims that Dumfries has emerged as an ‘ideal player’ for new manager Erik ten Hag in his preferred system.

It’s claimed that the Netherlands international is ‘one target under consideration’ as his compatriot looks to turn United’s fortunes around with the help of some astute acquisitions.

Current first-choice right-back Diogo Dalot has reportedly been informed that he will not be sold this summer, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka appears to be surplus to requirements.

The 24-year-old fell out of favour following the arrival of Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis last term and has struggled to develop the attacking side of his game during his three-year stint at Old Trafford.

And with the full-backs charged with providing the width and attacking threat from out wide in Ten Hag’s set-up, it’s unlikely that Wan-Bissaka will be able to force his way back into the starting XI.

What has Romano said about Dumfries?

Romano has stated that Dumfries joining United ‘could’ happen, although Inter want around £34m and are yet to receive a proposal from the Red Devils or any other club.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think this could be a possibility, but it depends on the proposal because Inter want €35-40 million (£30-34m) for Dumfries, and at the moment, they have no proposal from United or from any club.

“So, at the moment, it is still a quiet situation; we will see in the coming days.”

Would Dumfries be a good signing?

Dumfries instantly settled into life with the Nerazzurri last season, registering five goals and seven assists in 45 appearances, helping his side claim the Italian Cup.

His eye-catching performances led to Eurosport reporter Siavoush Fellahi labelling him a “difference maker” and his underlying numbers were equally as impressive.

As per FBref, Dumfries has ranked in the 99th percentile for both touches in the attacking penalty area and progressive passes received, the 98th for total shots, and the 93rd for aerial duels won amongst fellow full-backs over the last year.

His arrival in the red half of Manchester could help to ease the transition into life under Ten Hag, allowing the tactician to implement his way of playing with fewer teething problems.
