As with the vast majority of NFL offseasons, this past spring saw plenty of teams change their head coaches as they look to head in a different direction.

Not all changes were due to the need to breathe new life into the team though, for instance the Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved on from Bruce Arians purely because he had decided he wanted a change from the sideline and wanted to move upstairs in the organisation.

Overall, there were ten teams that decided to make some changes this past offseason; along with the Buccaneers you has the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints and New York Giants all brought in new people, meaning that the league had nearly a third of all teams make changes.

So now that the dust has settled and the season is very much coming over the horizon, it’s time to take a look at the coaching landscape and put the coaches in some form of order.

Using Tiermaker, we broke them up into five categories for this exercise:

Safe as houses:

The coaches who even if they went 0-16 this upcoming season would still be able to come back in 2023 without anybody blinking an eyelid

Pretty secure:

Might not be able to get away with as much as the ones above, but who would still have to do something spectacular to lose their job

Middle of the road:

One bad season could put them in jeopardy, but for the most part have enough going for them to know that this season shouldn’t pose too much of a threat to them

Just hired:

Self-explanatory

Need to buck their ideas up:

Have to start producing this season or their job could be called into question

On the hot seat:

In danger of not even making it through the whole campaign

And so with that being said, here is our list of where we believe each NFL head coach ranks heading into this upcoming season:

Safe as houses: Sean McVay, Andy Reid, Bill Belichick, Sean McDermott

Pretty secure: John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin, Kliff Kingsbury, Zac Taylor, Brandon Staley, Ron Rivera, Mike Vrabel

Middle of the road: Pete Carroll, Dan Campbell, Nick Sirianni, Robert Saleh, Mike McCarthy

Just hired: Matt Eberflus, Nathaniel Hackett, Lovie Smith, Doug Pederson, Josh McDaniels, Mike McDaniel, Kevin O’Connell, Dennis Allen, Brian Daboll, Todd Bowles

Need to buck their ideas up: Frank Reich, Arthur Smith, Matt LaFleur, Kyle Shanahan

On the hot seat: Kevin Stefanski, Matt Rhule
