Manchester United target Antony ‘would consider the possibility’ of joining the club this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils appear to be closing in on a move for the talented 22-year-old as new manager Erik ten Hag looks to add some additional firepower to his forward line.

What is the latest news involving Antony?

A recent report from The Sun claimed that United officials landed in Amsterdam over the last few days in order to try and finalise a deal for Antony following successful negotiations.

It’s claimed that the Dutch giants could demand €80m (£68m) for their prized asset, who made his admiration for Ten Hag clear after he announced his decision to take over the reins at Old Trafford.

"I want to thank you for everything you taught me. Know that I will always stand with you if you need me," wrote Antony on social media.

The Brazil international enjoyed a successful 2021/22 campaign under the tutelage of Ten Hag, racking up 22 goal contributions in his 32 appearances, firing Ajax to the Eredivisie title.

What has Romano said about Antony?

United ended last season in sixth position in the Premier League, meaning they are set to miss out on next term's Champions League.

However, Romano doesn’t envisage there being a ‘big problem’ from Antony’s perspective, as the 20-time English champions remain a ‘top club’.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “I'm sure that on the player’s side, I don't see any big problem. Of course, Manchester United are not playing in the Champions League, but they're always a top club.

“So, the player would dream of Premier League football, so I'm sure that he would consider this possibility.”

Who else could Man Utd sign?

United have already seen their rivals Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur significantly strengthen their first-team squads this summer.

That has only heightened the need to improve the options currently available to Ten Hag before the season gets underway on the first weekend of August.

And United’s pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong seems to be the priority alongside Antony.

Romano has revealed that United and Barca have been in ‘direct contact’ over the Dutch international, with the Catalan giants demanding €86m (£74m) for the technically gifted ace.

Another Ajax player in Lisandro Martinez is also believed to be on Ten Hag’s radar as he looks to implement his specific playing style as quickly as possible in the red half of Manchester.
