Crystal Palace ‘interested’ in bringing £4m wonderkid to Selhurst Park

Patrick Vieira taking charge of a Premier League game for Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace ‘are interested’ in signing Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards this summer, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

The Eagles have been relatively quiet so far in the current window, although have secured the signature of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion and continue to pursue RC Lens midfielder Cheick Doucoure.

What is the latest news involving Edwards?

A recent report from The Sun claimed that Palace manager Patrick Vieira is planning to switch to a back five when the new Premier League season gets underway in August.

And with defenders Martin Kelly and Jarosław Jach already being released by the south London outfit, new additions along the backline are likely to be targeted.

One name believed to be on Vieira’s wish list is Edwards following an impressive breakout campaign with Peterborough where he made 38 appearances despite their eventual relegation from the Championship.

Football Insider claim that the Posh have already rejected a £4 million bid for the highly-rated 19-year-old from Palace, who is attracting admiring glances from several Premier League sides.

It’s claimed that Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Southampton are also keeping close tabs on Edwards’ situation ahead of potential moves.

What has Barclay said about Edwards?

Barclay has confirmed that Palace are eager to snap up the talented teenager, although believes it may be ‘tough’ for him to make the step up to the Premier League at this stage of his career.

He told GiveMeSport: “Palace are interested in him from what I’m told, but he’s someone who’s very young, only played Championship football last season but in a struggling team.

“So to expect him to come into a Premier League side, if they were playing regularly that way in a back three, could be tough, although I was told that maybe a three would suit him more, so maybe that would make sense as well.”

Would Edwards be a good signing?

Edwards still has three years left to run on his current contract after putting pen to paper on fresh terms in May 2021, and with Spurs and co. potentially readying offers of their own, Palace may have to pay a sizeable sum to bring him to Selhurst Park.

However, the 5 foot 11 centre-back could be worth the outlay, as he has established himself as one of the Football League’s most promising young prospects.

What year did Crystal Palace legend Ian Wright leave the club?

As per WhoScored, Edwards averaged 1.4 interceptions, 3.7 clearances and 0.6 blocks per league game last term, placing him in the top five for each metric when compared to his teammates.

The youngster’s eye-catching displays earned him a maiden call-up to England’s Under-19s back in October, and he’s gone on to claim seven caps since, highlighting why Edwards is so highly sought-after.
