Man Utd: £250k-a-week star could make shock stay at Old Trafford

Incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag applauds Ajax fans

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial could still have a future at Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The France international hasn’t played for the Red Devils since January having spent the second half of the season on loan at Sevilla, but he could come back into the frame under Erik ten Hag.

What’s the latest news involving Martial?

Having fallen down the pecking order under Ralf Rangnick, which saw him play just eight minutes in his first eight league matches in charge, the 26-year-old was loaned out to increase his game-time.

Martial’s struggles continued and while he made 12 appearances for the Spanish outfit, he scored just once and laid on one assist.

He’s now back at Old Trafford ahead of next season and will be hoping to impress Ten Hag in pre-season and win a place in the Dutchman’s squad.

The £250,000 per-week forward’s case to become part of the future again at United should be helped by the departures of Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani, although Anthony Elanga has since broken into the first-team, so Martial might have his work cut out.

How much did Man Utd pay to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo?

But with two years remaining on his United contract and a proven record of 79 goals in red, Jones reckons he could be part of Ten Hag’s plans.

What did Jones say about Martial?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They’ll look through the squad from last season and think, Cristiano Ronaldo, top goalscorer, fine, he can do that again, Marcus Rashford has to get better. Anthony Martial, I’m not ruling out a future for him, he can get better.

“Jadon Sancho, Elanga, they’re all really good options who didn’t fulfil their potential last season.”

Could Martial get a chance?

Despite some high-profile attacking departures, United still have an abundance of talent at the top end of the pitch, although Martial’s versatility could stand him in good stead.

He’s spent much of his career playing through the middle, although with Ronaldo likely to occupy the number nine position, the forward might have to look elsewhere.

Fortunately, Martial has played wide left more than 120 times in his playing career, but competition will be fierce alongside Rashford and Sancho.

However, those two scored just 10 goals between them in all competitions, meaning no one in the squad is guaranteed of a place in Ten Hag’s side, something Martial could soon take advantage of.
