Rangers: £4m signing would be 'boost for Van Bronckhorst' at Ibrox

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst giving instructions to his side

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst could secure ‘a boost’ by winning the race for Stephen Odey this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Randers FC striker is believed to be on the radar of both the Old Firm rivals as they search for the upper hand in what could be another enthralling title race in Scotland next term.

What is the latest news involving Odey?

A recent report from All Nigeria Soccer (via the Daily Record) claimed that initial talks have been held with Randers and sporting director Ross Wilson over a move for Odey.

It’s also stated that the Danish outfit are demanding a fee of around £4 million from any interested party in the 24-year-old and that they’ve already recently rejected a bid of €3m plus add-ons from an unnamed Belgian Pro League club.

However, Randers’ sporting director Soren Pedersen refused to deny interest from either Glasgow club in a recent interview.

“It is certainly not so concrete that I have an offer,” said Pedersen. “That could easily happen. There are many clubs that have shown interest in him, because he is a good player. But there is nothing concrete from there.”

Odey registered 14 goals and two assists in 33 appearances last season, taking his senior career goal contribution total up to 42, and he could make a big impression in the SPFL should he make the switch.

What has O’Rourke said about Odey?

Rangers saw Celtic snatch their Scottish Premiership title away from them last season with a narrow four-point margin separating the two fierce foes.

And O’Rourke believes snapping Odey up ahead of the Hoops could prove to be beneficial for Van Bronckhorst next term.

He told GiveMeSport: “It’s always good to get one over your old rivals, whether that’s on the pitch or in the transfer market as well. So, I’m sure it will be a boost for Van Bronckhorst if they were able to win the race for his signature.”

Do Rangers need Odey?

Cedric Itten joined Young Boys at the start of June on a permanent basis, leaving Alfredo Morelos and Fashion Sakala as the only recognised strikers in Rangers’ first-team squad.

Ally McCoist celebrates after scoring Rangers' second goal

Ally McCoist is Rangers’ club record goal scorer, but when did he leave the club as a player?

Morelos only has 12 months remaining on his contract, though, and 90min has disclosed that the Gers would be willing to sanction his sale if he refuses to put pen to paper on fresh terms.

Therefore, bringing in someone to replace the Colombian’s goals will surely be at the top of Van Bronckhorst’s priorities for the summer, and Odey could be an ideal candidate to do just that.
