Wolverhampton Wanderers target David Carmo has similarities to new Aston Villa central defender Diego Carlos and would be a 'physical' presence in the Molineux backline, according to journalist Josh Holland.

Bruno Lage - who was appointed as Wolves' head coach last summer - has failed to welcome any fresh faces to the West Midlands since the transfer window reopened for business, but Carmo is firmly on his radar.

What's the latest news involving Carmo?

According to Portuguese media outlet O Jogo, Wolves have become the latest club to add Braga centre-half Carmo to their list of targets.

The report suggests Lage's charges could take the lead in negotiations despite additional interest from Liverpool and Manchester United, who could offer European football after finishing in the Premier League's top six.

Wolfsburg have already attempted to broker a deal by lodging an £11million bid, but that fell short of Braga's valuation.

The central defender has a £34million release clause written into his contract, which still has three years to run, meaning his current employers are in the driving seat when it comes to negotiations.

Carmo has been identified as a potential replacement for Romain Saiss, who has joined Turkish giants Besiktas after his Molineux deal came to an end.

What has Josh Holland said about Carmo?

Holland believes Carmo boasts similar traits to Carlos, who has joined Midlands rivals Aston Villa in a £26million deal from Sevilla.

However, the journalist has doubts over whether the Braga man is capable of adjusting to the rigours of the English top flight.

Holland told GIVEMESPORT: "I'm a fan of the Braga defender and he reminds me a bit of Diego Carlos with the way he plays - he's very strong, physical and loves a challenge.

"But there's always the question over whether he will be okay adapting to the Premier League."

What would Carmo add to Wolves?

Carmo boasted a pass completion percentage of 80.9 last season, emphasising that he is comfortable in possession and able to start moves from the back.

He has also represented Portugal at international level, with him clinching seven and 10 caps for the under-20 and under-19 sides respectively, while he earned a call-up to the senior squad for the recent Nations League fixtures.

Although Lage currently has Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Max Kilman, Yerson Mosquera and Toti as options at the heart of the defence, 22-year-old Carmo is coveted by numerous clubs and would be a coup signing.
