Manchester United had a disastrous 2021/22 campaign.

After signing Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, the Red Devils were expected to challenge on all fronts.

But they underwhelmed massively.

They finished sixth in the Premier League and missed out on Champions League football.

The English giants were also unable to get to the latter stages of the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

It's no secret that United need to strengthen in pretty much every area this summer. They are far behind the best teams in England and will be looking to close the gap.

Erik ten Hag was appointed United boss in May. While United have been linked to every name under the sun this summer, the Dutchman is yet to complete his first signing of his tenure.

There is still plenty of time for the club to do their business, though.

With the new season just over a month away, The Manchester Evening News have named United's 'dream' XI for the 2022/23 campaign.

They've gone for a realistic XI, adding in three players that United have been heavily linked this with in the past few months. View it below...

GK: David de Gea

RB: Diogo Dalot

CB: Harry Maguire

CB: Jurrien Timber

LB: Luke Shaw

CM: Frenkie de Jong

CM: Scott McTominay

CM: Bruno Fernandes

RW: Antony

LW: Jadon Sancho

ST: Cristiano Ronaldo

Timber, De Jong and Antony feature in Manchester Evening News' 'dream' United XI for next season.

Maguire makes the side ahead of Raphael Varane, McTominay is included instead of Fred, while Dalot features in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, the XI has not gone down very well at all.

Both United and non-United fans have slammed the XI, with many claiming it's more of a 'nightmare' than a 'dream'.

View some reaction below...

The XI is realistic but is it a dream? Probably not. A club of stature should be aiming much higher.

While De Jong, Timber and Antony are all outstanding players, this isn't an XI that will be able to challenge the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool next season.

But it would at least be an improvement on their 2021/22 side.

Whether Ten Hag will be able to convince the three additions in the XI to make the switch, though, remains to be seen.
