Alpine driver Fernando Alonso has had his performance in Canada last weekend described as 'incredible' by fellow double world champion Mika Hakkinen.

The Spaniard underlined his class last week in Montreal as he put his Alpine car on P2 for the race after a fine performance in qualifying.

Indeed, he handled the wet conditions supremely well and, though the race saw him finish an eventual ninth thanks to a power deficit and a 5-second time penalty, it was another weekend that showed Alonso's talents are far from on the wane.

Certainly, Hakkinen was suitably impressed with him having this to say when reflecting on events last week in Canada:

"Fernando started racing in Formula 1 during my final season, so it's incredible to see him on the front row of the grid more than 20 years later!" Hakkinen said in his regular column for Unibet.

"He still loves racing in F1 and he made the most of Saturday's challenging weather conditions to grab P2 on the grid.

"It takes a huge amount of mental and physical strength and stamina to remain competitive at this level, so it's no small achievement for Fernando to have been pushing for pole position!"

Last weekend showed that if the car is good enough for Alonso then he will still deliver results, with the rain proving a bit of a leveller on Saturday in Montreal.

Alpine will be working hard to achieve that for him, then, with Silverstone up next in a week from now.
