Alvin Kamara: New Orleans Saints RB facing possible suspension over February arrest

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara could be set for a lengthy suspension heading into the 2022 NFL season following an off-field incident during the offseason.

Alvin Kamara over the past few years since he has entered the NFL has become arguably one of the better dual-threat running backs on the planet. Having been taken in the 3rd round of the draft back in 2017 by the New Orleans Saints – a steal when you consider the stats that are coming next – he has proved himself incredibly capable both through the air and on the ground.

In his five seasons so far, he has racked up 4,238 rushing yards and 47 touchdowns in the regular season whilst also managing to grab 3,263 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns, made even more impressive when you consider that, when you add sharing running back duties with Mark Ingram during his early career and injures have restricted him to just 45 starts.

He has arguably become just as big a part of the offense as wide receiver Michael Thomas, and with the Saints still on the search for their next franchise quarterback, with the likes of Taysom Hill, Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton and Ian Book on the roster, he can be a very effective weapon in helping whoever the quarterback is to be a success.

But things could be derailed to start the season off, because Kamara could be set to face some time away from the team.

What’s the situation?

Kamara was involved in an incident during Pro Bowl weekend back in February that involved a physical altercation with someone at the Cromwell Casino. As per CBS42, Darnell Greene, the victim in the incident:

“Was leaving the nightclub and headed towards the elevators, where he approached a large group of people waiting. He then briefly spoke to one of the group members while waiting.

“A statement from Greene indicated that as he tried to enter the elevator with the group, a man, later identified as Kamara, put his hand on Greene’s chest to stop him from coming in. Greene then tried to push Kamara’s hand off his chest, but was then shoved, causing him to stumble back.

“His statement then shared that after he fell, he was kicked by multiple people and eventually fell unconscious.”

Kamara was arrested following the incident and was released after he posted $5,000 bond, but the incident could be set to follow him into the NFL season.

What are the possible consequences?

According to Pro Football Talk, Kamara is ‘bracing’ for a six-week suspension over the incident. The report claims that:

“Alvin Kamara is bracing for a suspension of at least six weeks. The only question is when the suspension will be imposed. The league typically prefers to wait until the criminal legal process has ended before taking action. Kamara faces felony battery charges, with the next hearing set for August.”

The Saints didn’t have the best season in 2021, going 9-8 and missing the playoffs, so they’ll be hoping for a bounceback year in 2022, but they may be forced to do it without arguably their greatest threat by their side.
