Lionel Messi had so many ups and downs in the 2021/22 season.

The Argentine forward's historic 21-year stint at Barcelona came to an end in the summer of 2021.

Messi was desperate to stay at the club but Barcelona could not extend his contract due to financial restrictions.

It was Paris Saint-Germain who won the race for his signature as he signed a two-year deal with the option of another year.

Messi, despite being in his mid-30s, was expected to dominate for the French giants.

It was hoped that he, alongside fellow superstars Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, would end PSG's wait for a Champions League trophy.

But it was not to be.

Messi showed flashes of his brilliance but he found form and fitness hard to come by.

He failed to guide PSG to Champions League glory as they crashed out at the last-16 stage.

Despite his struggles for the French club, Messi finished the season on fire for Argentina.

He was absolutely magnificent in Argentina's Finalissima triumph against Italy and then followed that up with a five-goal haul in his last game of the season.
