Man Utd: Ten Hag secures 'big advantage' in £69m pursuit at Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag claps fans

Manchester United have been handed a ‘big advantage’ in their pursuit of Ajax star Antony thanks to Erik ten Hag now being in the Old Trafford dugout, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Ten Hag left the Eredivisie giants to take over as the Red Devils’ new boss at the end of last season and, although he is still working towards securing his first signing at the helm, Antony is clearly among his targets.

What’s the latest news involving Antony?

According to The Sun, Manchester United are closing in on their first acquisition of the ten Hag era as a big-money deal for Antony is edging closer.

The report suggests Red Devils officials were due in Amsterdam this week as they looked to rubber-stamp the swoop for the six-cap Brazil international, while Ajax are seeking a fee of up to £69million.

Convincing Antony to head to Old Trafford does not appear to be an obstacle as the winger is understood to be determined to seal a reunion with ten Hag.

The duo enjoyed a fruitful partnership at Ajax, with Antony scoring 22 goals and registering a further 20 assists in 79 appearances under the now-Manchester United chief’s stewardship.

It seems Antony is taking matters into his own hands and attempting to force through a move after being absent as his Ajax team-mates returned for pre-season training on Friday.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Antony?

O’Rourke believes ten Hag could prove to be a crucial influence as Manchester United attempt to get a deal for Antony over the line.

The journalist feels the Brazilian, along with a host of other Ajax stars, is keen to seal a reunion with the Dutchman.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it’s a big advantage for Manchester United in their pursuit of these Ajax players because they know ten Hag and know how he works. They all, obviously, seemingly enjoyed working under him at Ajax as well.

“I think it gives United an extra advantage in their pursuit of these players from Ajax, the opportunity to work with Erik ten Hag again.”

Are any other clubs looking to sign Antony this summer?

According to 90min, Chelsea are mulling over whether to leapfrog Manchester United in the queue for Antony’s signature.

The report suggests the west Londoners, who could offer Champions League football after finishing third in the Premier League last season, held talks with the 22-year-old’s representatives while they were recently in the country.

A £4.25billion takeover led by Todd Boehly means Chelsea are able to splash the cash once again, having initially been halted in their attempts to welcome fresh faces to Stamford Bridge due to sanctions placed upon former owner Roman Abramovich.
