The Lionesses thrashed the Netherlands 5-1 in a Euro 2022 warm-up fixture, but fans couldn’t get over the colour of the kits the two nations were playing in. England came from a goal behind to beat the reigning European champions in dominant fashion and continue their unbeaten streak since Sarina Wiegman took over last year. Beth Mead scored twice, while Lucy Bronze, Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp all got on the scoresheet as well. It was a statement display from the home side, that will no doubt build confidence ahead of the Euros this summer. Yet, Wiegman has stressed that the team still have areas to improve and will remain ‘grounded.’ While the impressive result delighted fans at Elland Road, the main talking point on social media was actually the seemingly opposite kits the teams were wearing. Typically, you’d expect an England team at home to be playing in white, while the Netherlands have long been associated with the colour orange. However, it was actually the Lionesses who sported full orange attire. The Netherlands, in contrast, wore white shirts. 

What did fans say? 

Former Arsenal and England star Ian Wright was a pundit for the match on ITV and tweeted his confusion in the build-up to the contest. 

“England playing in orange at home against the Netherlands in white,” he said, alongside the face with a monocle and unamused emojis. 

Similarly, the Kit Crimes Twitter page wrote: “England in orange at home against the Netherlands in white is absolute nonsense, even though it's only a friendly.”

Molly Hudson, a women’s football writer for the Guardian, summed it up by saying: “Yep…that’s England in Orange and Holland in White.” 

Wiegman was the manager of the Netherlands when they won Euro 2017 and one fan even joked that England had not only stolen the Dutch side’s coach, but also their kit. 

“England took the Netherlands’ kit, coach, and now they’re trying to take their Euro’s trophy,” they said. 

England continuing fine form 

Despite the kit disaster, England will be incredibly happy with how their Euro 2022 preparation is going. 

Since Wiegman took over, the team have played 13 matches –– winning 11 and drawing twice. 

During this time, they have won the Arnold Clark Cup and convincingly beaten the likes of Spain, Belgium and now the Netherlands. 

England have never won a major tournament before, but optimism for this summer is continuing to grow. 

Gareth Southgate’s side came agonisingly close to Euros glory last year. Fingers crossed, Wiegman’s Lionesses can go one step better.
