Serena Williams had admitted she’s unsure if she’ll return to Wimbledon again after this year.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is vying for a record-equalling 24th major title at this year’s tournament.

Williams announced her long-awaited return to tennis earlier this month after rumours of her impending retirement had started to circulate.

She returned to action at Eastbourne last week –– partnering with Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the doubles.

Williams undecided on future

Ahead of Wimbledon, where the 40-year-old has accepted a wildcard for the ladies’ singles, Williams revealed when she decided to return to the game.

“I didn't retire,” she stressed. “I just needed to heal physically, mentally. And I had no plans, to be honest. I just didn't know when I would come back. I didn't know how I would come back.

“Obviously, Wimbledon is such a great place to be, and it just kind of worked out. I don't know exactly when, but it was some time ago. Definitely not weeks. It was before the French Open.”

However, when questioned on whether she plans to return next year, the seven-time Wimbledon champion was less certain on her future.

“I don't know,” she admitted. “I can only tell you that I'm here. Who knows where I'll pop up next. You just got to be ready.”

Investment plans

Williams now has her own venture capital firm called ‘Serena Ventures’ and was reportedly interested in buying Chelsea, alongside the likes of Lewis Hamilton.

The tennis star stated that a part of her “feels like that is a little bit more of my life now than tournaments.”

She added: “When you do have a venture company, you do have to go all in. It definitely takes literally all my extra time. And it's fun. I'm currently out of office for the next few weeks, so if you email me, you'll get the nice 'out of office' reply. Everyone knows that I'll be back in a few weeks. But it's good. I absolutely love what I do. I love investing in companies.”

Can Williams win Wimbledon?

Williams has been in touching distance of Margaret Court’s all-time Slam record for five years now, but it seems as though she is past her best now.

Yet, grass has always been the American’s favourite surface and there is a distinct lack of grass court specialists on the women’s tour right now.

Williams also has a favourable draw this year, though she is on the same side as world number one Iga Swiatek.

The 40–year-old faces France’s Harmony Tan in the opening round on Tuesday.
