Ada Hegerberg paid a touching tribute to the victims of a shooting in Oslo during a match against New Zealand.

The 26-year-old captained her side to a 2-0 victory against the Football Ferns at Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadion.

The Norwegian capital had been rocked by an attack outside a popular LGBTQ+ nightclub, the London Pub, in the early hours of Saturday morning. The Herr Nilsen Jazz Club and another pub were also in the vicinity.

Two people were killed and eight others taken to hospital in what has been described as an "act of Islamist terrorism".

The Norwegian and New Zealand players paid tribute to the victims by holding hands in the centre circle before kick-off, prior to Hegerberg’s own touching moment during the match.

The striker opened the scoring in the 34th minute, before holding up her captain’s rainbow armband as a mark of respect.

She later posted a photo of the moment on Twitter with the caption: “🤍🏳️‍🌈 #Love”.

Guro Bergsvand then doubled Norway’s lead in the dying moments of the match.

Hegerberg, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, has returned to her national team set-up for Euro 2022.

The 26-year-old, who finished second with Norway at Euro 2013, stopped playing for her country in 2017 due to poor treatment of the women’s team.

"It has been a deeply depressing feeling,” she said in 2019. “I had nightmares after being with the national team, you shouldn't have things like that. If you want to get anywhere in life you have to make choices.

"Immediately the thought came into my mind: 'I think I'll have to stop playing for the national team'. [Then] everything just ran off and I started to sleep well again."

It was a big loss for Norway – Hegerberg is regarded as one of the best talents in women’s football. She has won six Women’s Champions League titles with Lyon and is the all-time highest scorer in the competition with 59 goals.

Hegerberg announced she was returning in March, saying: “I am very glad to be able to come back with the team and get a new story started.”

Norway, who are in Group A alongside hosts England, Austria and Northern Ireland, are considered one of the favourites to win Euro 2022.
