Rangers will please the Ibrox fanbase if they succeed in beating arch-rivals Celtic to the signing of Randers striker Stephen Odey, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

While John Souttar will offer Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst a new defensive option following his switch from Hearts, the Glasgow giants have yet to strengthen in other areas of the pitch ahead of the upcoming campaign.

What's the latest news involving Odey?

According to All Nigeria Soccer, Rangers and Celtic are mulling over whether to make a summer move for Odey.

The report suggests Randers are demanding a fee worth in the region of £3.5million for the one-cap Nigeria international and van Bronckhorst's charges have more concrete interest than their cross-city rivals.

In an interview with Danish media outlet Bold, Randers sporting director Soren Pedersen failed to quash rumours of the Old Firm sides circling and admitted a move is possible as long as a fee which suits all parties can be agreed.

Sporting director Ross Wilson appears to be leading Rangers' charge for Odey's signature as it is understood that he has held preliminary talks over the frontman.

Odey initially joined Randers on loan ahead of last season, but a permanent switch was rubber-stamped last November thanks to an impressive run of form.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Odey?

O'Rourke believes Rangers will give themselves a major boost by beating Celtic to Odey's services.

The journalist also feels earning bragging rights over their neighbours would please supporters.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "It will always go down well with the fans, I think, if Rangers were able to beat Celtic to a potential transfer target.

"They've obviously done their homework on this player and it seems that both Rangers and Celtic are interested in him.

"I think if Rangers were to win the race, it would give them a lift ahead of the new season."

Why is Odey of interest to Rangers?

Odey enjoyed a productive 2021/22 campaign, registering 14 goals and two assists in 33 appearances.

That means the 24-year-old has now found the back of the net 37 times during the early stages of his senior club career, so he would add firepower to van Bronckhorst's ranks.

Odey could also prove to be a shrewd addition as doubts continue over the future of Alfredo Morelos, who has 12 months remaining on his Ibrox contract.

According to Spanish sources, Aston Villa and Sevilla are mulling over whether to head to Glasgow with an offer which would test Rangers' resolve.

Morelos' exit would leave van Bronckhorst with Kemar Roofe and Fashion Sakala as his only centre forward options, so Odey's arrival could pay off.
