Manchester United are set to sign Frenkie de Jong and the Barcelona midfielder is 'excited' to become the first arrival of Erik ten Hag's Old Trafford reign, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Ten Hag officially took over as the Red Devils' boss following the conclusion of last season and it appears he is finally closing in on his opening addition to the squad he inherited.

What's the latest news involving de Jong?

According to Goal, Manchester United are closing in on reaching an agreement which will see de Jong head to the Premier League for the first time in his career.

The report suggests a compromise fee of £69million, with add-ons, could prove to be the breakthrough and there is growing confidence that the 44-cap Netherlands international will be on the Red Devils' books ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed Manchester United have remained in contact with Barcelona despite being frustrated in their initial efforts to strike a deal.

Barcelona rejected an opening bid worth £51.3million, plus add-ons, earlier this month and it emerged that de Jong's preference was to stay at the Nou Camp.

But it is understood that ten Hag told the Manchester United hierarchy that securing the 25-year-old's services is vital as he aims to complete a midfield rebuild during the early stages of his reign.

What has Alex Crook said about de Jong?

Crook understands de Jong is on the brink of joining Manchester United and the central midfielder has come to terms with being allowed to exit Barcelona.

The talkSPORT reporter believes ten Hag has played a key role in negotiations behind closed doors.

Crook told GIVEMESPORT: "I think de Jong has now accepted that he's leaving Barcelona.

"Obviously, he wasn't completely sold on United at the start, but I think that's changed and ten Hag has been doing a bit of work behind the scenes.

"I think he's now quite excited to be his first signing and that one will happen. It's become a bit of a saga."

How much will de Jong be paid at Old Trafford?

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are willing to offer de Jong a contract worth £395,000-a-week.

The report suggests the Dutchman, who made 46 appearances for Barcelona last season, is set to become the highest-paid player at Old Trafford.

That would result in de Jong securing a sizeable wage rise as he currently rakes in £164,000 every seven days at the Nou Camp.
