British tennis player Jodie Burrage has been praised for looking after a stricken ball-boy midway through her first round match at Wimbledon.Burrage was into the second set of her encounter against Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, which had already been suspended for an hour due to rainfall.Shortly after play resumed, Burrage was forced to stop the match again after she spotted an unwell ballboy. The 23-year-old rushed to help the light-headed ballboy to a chair, before handing him a sports drink and gel.She then stayed with him while they waited for medical help to arrive, feeding him Percy Pig sweets which were provided by a spectator.Play was eventually restarted after the ballboy received help, with Burrage suffering a 6-2, 6-3 defeat.Despite her loss, Burrage received widespread praise on social media for helping the ballboy during the match.

One Twitter user wrote: “Good on Jodie Burrage for looking out for the poorly ball boy”, while another posted: “Jodie Burrage giving an unwell ball kid some Percy Pigs is the purest thing I've seen in a while”.

Others commended Burrage but criticised the time it took for the ballboy to receive medical attention.

“Brilliant from Jodie Burrage reacting quickly to help the ball boy who was unwell! 👏,” a Twitter user wrote. “However no idea why after 5 mins or so of helping the lad no one more medically trained didn't come and take over from her🤷‍♂️ #Wimbledon”.

Another post read: “Where the heck are the medical support people @Wimbledon? Players shouldn't be left to provide first response care! Well done to @jodieburrage for stepping in and helping the ballboy!”

Burrage is just one of 17 British players competing at Wimbledon this year, including Emma Raducanu, Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie and Heather Watson.

Raducanu, the reigning US Open champion, will play Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck on Centre Court this afternoon.

The 19-year-old has only played 33 minutes of competitive tennis on grass so far this season due to fitness issues.
