John Cena is one of the most famous professional wrestlers in the world, and is also a crossover star, after working in a variety of mainstream Hollywood movies.

And he’s also a big gamer.

Cena, a 17-time WWE Champion, has repeatedly evoked video games in his merchandise, particularly with their Nintendo-esque stylings.

And it has now been revealed that Cena actually lobbied Nintendo to make a new Metroid game back in 2017.

As per Video Games Chronicle, the news comes from Giant Bomb’s Dan Ryckert.

Ryckert previously worked for WWE and he has revealed that Cena was a part of a photoshoot at Nintendo’s HQ, showing off what the Switch could do before its release.

Ryckert tweeted: “During this photo shoot in 2017, Cena repeatedly told the Nintendo reps how much he wanted a new 2D Metroid.”

John Cena says that Theory is his favourite WWE Superstar

Metroid Dread was released in 2021 to great critical acclaim, receiving an 88 score on Metacritic, and Ryckert says that Nintendo took the time to send Cena a copy.

Ryckert continued: “When Metroid Dread came out years later, he was sent a copy. Cena’s people sent an email back saying ‘John loves it’.”

Cena is clearly a big Metroid fan but he has previously claimed that his favourite video game of all time is the Command and Conquer series.

Of course, video games have become a much bigger part of the WWE locker room in recent years, especially with the success of the Up Up Down Down YouTube channel, fronted by Xavier Woods of the New Day. They regularly invite members of the roster onto the show to compete in video game challenges, while ex-WWE wrestler Tyler Breeze is regularly seen competing with Woods in the WWE 2K22 Battle of the Brands.
