Newcastle United signing Thorgan Hazard is something Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie could see happening.

The Tyneside club are reportedly interested in buying the Belgian attacker this summer, with Borussia Dortmund said to be open to a sale.

What is the latest news involving Hazard?

According to Bild (via Sport Witness), Newcastle are keen on signing Hazard in a potential £12.9m deal.

The German newspaper has also stated that Dortmund are not against the idea of a departure, so this looks like a transfer that should not be too complicated for the Magpies to complete.

Last season, Hazard made a total of 29 appearances, scoring five goals along the way to take his senior career tally to 82. However, he made just 14 starts in the Bundesliga.

Since joining Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2019, Hazard has made close to 100 appearances for the German side and helped them win the 2020/21 DFB-Pokal.

What has Downie said about Hazard to Newcastle?

While he has not heard anything about the St James' Park outfit being interested in Hazard, it is a move Downie could imagine happening.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Sky Sports reporter said: "I've seen a lot of him. I used to cover the Belgium stuff, and I think he'd be the sort of player that would really improve the team, so that's one you could see potentially happening. Whether they are interested in Hazard, I have to say I don't know."

Would Hazard be a good signing for Newcastle?

Hazard certainly did not have his best season last term, but his time in Germany overall has been pretty successful.

During his first campaign at Dortmund, the 29-year-old scored seven goals and provided 13 assists in 33 league appearances. It followed his final season at Monchengladbach, where he managed to reach double figures for both goals and assists in the Bundesliga, showing that he can be a productive attacker.

Hazard is also a very versatile player, something his former manager Marco Rose spoke about last year.

"Toto [Thorgan] is an excellent footballer who has good technique, who can go one-on-one, who has become more proficient defensively. He is a blessing for the coach," the ex-Dortmund boss said (via BVB Buzz).

"He’s very versatile. He can play at eight, he can play centre-forward, he can play at ten, he can play as a winger or a wing-back."

When you consider all of that, the 45-cap Belgium international could be an excellent addition to Eddie Howe's squad.
