Leeds ‘will now look’ to reinforce key position at Elland Road

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch looking very focused on the touchline

Leeds United ‘will now look’ to bring in someone to replace the departing Kalvin Phillips, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The Whites have already been very active in the transfer market and could still bring in several more fresh faces as manager Jesse Marsch looks to make his mark on the first-team squad.

What is the latest news involving Leeds?

Sky Sports have reported that Manchester City have agreed a deal with Leeds for Phillips, with a fee in the region of £45 million to £50m being settled upon.

The transfer has yet to be officially completed as the England international still needs to agree personal terms and pass a medical, although neither are expected to be an issue for the 26-year-old.

Phillips’ imminent exit will leave a significant void in Leeds’ midfield and securing a suitable heir will surely be a priority for Marsch this summer.

Leeds have already acquired the services of Marc Roca from Bayern Munich in an initial £10m deal, but further reinforcements are likely to be targeted now Phillips is set for pastures new.

What has Crook said about Leeds?

Roca is a defensive midfielder who likes to sit at the base of the engine room, dispossessing opponents before utilising his impressive range of passing to kickstart moves from deep.

Nevertheless, Crook believes the Leeds hierarchy will now step up their search for the Spaniard’s midfielder partner and Phillips’ successor.

He told GiveMeSport: “Obviously, they’ve already signed Marc Roca, and I think I said at the time that they were billing it as someone to play alongside Kalvin Phillips, and it was never really going to be the case. So, I think they will now look for a Phillips replacement.”

Who could Leeds sign?

A report from The Sun back in May claimed that Leeds were set to revive their interest in Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien after they failed to agree a deal last summer.

The 23-year-old is believed to have a relatively modest £10m release clause written into his contract and could prove to be a good value-for-money purchase by Marsch.

Meanwhile, reliable Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that RB Leipzig’s Tyler Adams is ‘on the shortlist’ of Leeds.

Marsch knows Adams well from their times together at New York Red Bulls and Leipzig, and Plettenberg has stated that the Bundesliga outfit are keen to offload the USA international.
