Worst tackle in Premier League history? Miguel Britos' challenge on Anthony Knockaert

Britos on Knockaert

Watford’s Miguel Britos’ tackle on Brighton’s Anthony Knockaert in 2017 is possibly the worst in Premier League history.

We don’t blame you if you don’t remember the challenge.

We too had erased it from our memory until we saw it posted on social media recently by Twitter account @epicredcards.

We’re not sure about ‘epic’ when talking about Britos’ challenge. More like horrific.

In the 24th minute of the 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road, Knockaert was running down the right wing for the visitors.

But he was brutally stopped in his tracks by a lunging ‘tackle’ by Britos that caught the Frenchman on his knee.

It was a shocking tackle and left Knockaert in agony.

Amazingly, Britos appeared shocked to be issued a red card by referee Graham Scott. It was his third red card in 11 Premier League appearances.

Fortunately – and remarkably – Knockaert was able to continue the match.

But still to this day, football fans can’t quite believe the shocking tackle Britos made that day.

Days afterwards, the Watford man issued an apology.

“I would like to publicly apologise for my red card on Saturday,” he told the club’s website.

“It was not my intention to hurt the Brighton player, and I am happy he was okay and able to carry on playing the match.

“My timing was wrong but there are no excuses and I was very sad when I was in the dressing room.

“I know I let the coach, my teammates, the fans and everyone down and for this I am very sorry.

“I have experienced the highs and lows in the two matches at Vicarage Road this season and this is football.

“I have seen the statistics about my red cards and I am not happy about this, this is not how I want my career to be talked about.

“I accept my punishment and I know it will be a few weeks before I can be available to play again, but I will be working hard in training so that, if selected, I am ready to help the team.”
