Tottenham are keeping a close eye on Barcelona star Clement Lenglet, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Antonio Conte has already made three signings this summer, but he is still waiting to bring in a central defender.

What's the latest news involving Lenglet?

According to the Telegraph, the Spurs boss wants to sign a left-sided defender this window, with his approach for top target Alessandro Bastoni unsuccessful.

Therefore, Conte is having to look elsewhere, and is now seeking a loan move for Lenglet, who's made 315 club appearances in his career, more than half of which have come for the La Liga giants.

According to ESPN, the north Londoners would be prepared to cover a 'significant part' of the Frenchman's wages if he makes the loan switch, with the 27-year-old not part of Xavi's plans moving forward, although Barcelona would prefer a permanent deal.

Lenglet played 27 times across all competitions last season but started just seven times in the top-flight, highlighting why he's surplus to requirements under the current regime.

Regardless, having experienced more than 40 games in the Champions League, Jones reckons that he would instantly improve the standard of Conte's backline.

What did Jones say about Lenglet?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "He would be a good fit and would raise the level of that defence, he's coming from a good club, and he's got a point to prove.

"I think Lenglet would be a good signing and there's absolutely no doubt he's one of the guys they've got their eye on."

Would Lenglet start for Tottenham?

If Tottenham end up signing someone in the calibre of Bastoni, Pau Torres or Josko Gvardiol, then Ben Davies might be fearing the worst.

The Welshman enjoyed an exceptional end to last season, with his form continuing on the international stage, which helped his country qualify for the World Cup, but if Spurs bring in a top left-sided centre-back, then he would be fighting for his place.

However, Lenglet doesn't fall into that elite category. Having been nothing more than a squad player at Barcelona over the last 12 months, Davies would have every right to believe that he should be starting above the France international if he arrives in north London this summer.

Lenglet, valued at £26m, would instantly improve the depth in Conte's squad, but there's nothing to suggest that he should walk straight into the Italian's best team ahead of Davies.
