Chelsea could approach Michael Edwards for a sporting director role at the club after his departure from Liverpool this summer, according to Dean Jones.

The news comes following Todd Boehly’s acquisition of Chelsea, after Roman Abramovich had put the club up for sale in March this year.

What’s the latest on Edwards?

It was announced in November last year that Edwards would be departing Liverpool this summer, after joining the club in 2011 and being part of a period of success which included a Champions League title as well as the Merseyside club’s first league triumph in 30 years.

Sky Sports have suggested that Chelsea would be interested in bringing Edwards to west London, after Boehly had previously referenced Liverpool’s transfer policy as a “great model” for success.

According to the same report, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have also approached the sporting director for roles at both clubs, but it is also thought that 43-year-old Edwards is insistent on taking a break from the game as it stands.

But Jones believes that there is definitely something in the links between Edwards and Chelsea.

What has Jones said about Edwards?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I know that Michael Edwards is one that has been spoken about, he's not the only one.

“I don't know the ins and outs of it at this stage but certainly it is something they're looking to do.

“It's not going to happen imminently though, this is a really complicated appointment, and something that I need to really delve into.”

Would Edwards be a good appointment for Chelsea?

Edwards would likely be an excellent addition as sporting director for Chelsea, with the club needing to get someone in the role as quickly as possible.

The former Liverpool man was responsible for some of the best bits of business that the club took part in across his time in the role, including securing £146m for the sale of Philippe Coutinho, signing Andrew Robertson for £10m, and of course the signings of two Liverpool greats in Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

And with a restructuring taking place following the change of ownership at Chelsea, the club may need to take a different approach to their transfer business, with Edwards’ greatest success at Liverpool being his ability to sign world-class players at a relatively low-cost.

Edwards would arguably be Chelsea’s best bit of business this summer if they could bring the former Liverpool man to the club, in an attempt to recreate the success of his time on Merseyside.
