Wolverhampton Wanderers ‘might even’ come into the equation for Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League for several months now and Molineux has been outlined as a potential destination for the highly-rated star.

What is the latest news involving Gabigol?

Barbosa, who is better known as Gabigol, reportedly set his sights on a return to European football last November and outlined England as his preferred landing spot.

90min claimed that West Ham, Arsenal, Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United were closely monitoring the Brazil international’s situation alongside clubs from Germany, Spain and Italy.

It was then revealed by Sky Sports in January that the Hammers ‘held talks’ over the potential signing of Gabigol, although a formal offer failed to materialise.

Now though, 90min have provided an update on the South American’s situation, stating that Wolves are said to open negotiations with Flamengo over the acquisition over their prized asset.

Chief scout Matthew Hobbs is said to be travelling to Brazil to try and finalise a deal for Gabigol, who hopes to lead the line for the Selecao at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

What has Jones said about Gabigol?

Jones believes that ‘somebody is going to take a punt’ on Gabigol this summer and that Wolves are one of the clubs that could be prepared to do so.

He told GiveMeSport: “Now, whether that ends up being Aston Villa or Newcastle or West Ham, I don't know, but I do think that this might be the summer Gabigol finally lands, and whoever takes that punt, it might be worth it.

“Wolves as well, by the way, they might even come into the equation. Somebody is going to take a punt on him.”

Gabigol, who Brazil legend Adriano described as “decisive”, is believed to have had a price tag of around £30 million last winter, and it’s a fee that could prove to be a bargain.

The 5 foot 11 ace failed to make an impact at Inter Milan after joining the club when he was still a teenager back in 2016 but he’s successfully rebuilt his career in his homeland.

In 154 appearances for Flamengo, Gabigol has registered 101 goals and 28 assists, establishing himself as one of the most clinical finishers on the continent.

He also has a trophy haul consisting of two Brazilian league titles and one Copa Libertadores, highlighting the winning mentality that Gabigol would bring to Wolves’ forward line.
