Wolves 'interested' in 'unbelievable' £12m midfielder at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Swansea midfielder Flynn Downes this summer, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Bruno Lage’s side are yet to sign a first-team player this summer, but could look to the Championship side to bolster their midfield ahead of the start of the Premier League season in August.

What’s the latest on Downes?

According to Wales Online, Crystal Palace, Southampton, and Wolves have shown an interest in the £1.8m-rated man this summer.

Downes enjoyed an impressive debut campaign after signing from Ipswich Town last summer, and could now be looking to make another step up to the Premier League this summer, after Leeds United had shown an interest in the 23-year-old earlier in the year.

But Leeds’ interest seems to have waned off with the aforementioned clubs seemingly leading the race for the former England U20 international this summer.

And Crook believes that Wolves are interested in the Swansea man, but may struggle to pay the funds for the Championship star.

What has Crook said about Downes?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Flynn Downes at Swansea is somebody that they’re interested in but he will cost £12m. I’m not sure they’ve got £12m.

“I think that really the owners don’t want to put any more of their own money into the project.

“Hence the fact that they’re trying to sell one or two players.

“I think it’s a tricky summer for Wolves and it could be a difficult season as well.”

Could Downes sign for Wolves?

Wolves are currently in desperate need for a midfielder, with the last time they made a permanent addition in the middle of the park being the signing of Leander Dendoncker back in the summer of 2018.

And with Joao Moutinho currently out of contract (though it is likely he will sign on for at least another season), and Ruben Neves’ future up in the air, the club could do with investing in a midfielder to bulk out their squad.

Downes would be a much needed addition for Wolves after being a consistent starter in English football’s second tier over the last season, making 39 appearances for Swansea, scoring one goal and providing two assists across the campaign, according to Transfermarkt.

The Englishman slotted in at centre-back on four occasions last season, according to the same stats provider, suggesting that he could be a versatile option in Lage’s squad.

He earned himself an average SofaScore rating of 6.83 for his performances in the Championship last season, suggesting that he has been a particularly consistent performer for the Swans over the last campaign.

Hailed as being “unbelievable” by his Swansea teammate, Matt Grimes, the midfielder could offer some much-needed depth to the squad at Molineux.

Downes might not be the name most Wolves fans had on the top of their transfer wish list this summer, but he may prove to be a bargain at £12m if he was to hit the ground running in the Premier League.
