Wolves are more likely to "pump money" into a new deal for Joao Moutinho than sign Matheus Nunes, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The Midlands club have been linked with Nunes, but Crook thinks things are pointing towards them extending Moutinho's contract rather than purchasing the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

The reliable Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that Wolves are struggling to reach an agreement on personal terms with Nunes as they look to sign the 23-year-old this summer.

Bruno Lage's need for a new midfielder is a pressing one. Moutinho's £100,000-a-week contract is about to expire, while there are doubts surrounding the future of Ruben Neves.

Earlier this month, the Express & Star reported that Moutinho was edging closer to putting pen to paper on a new deal at Molineux.

However, nothing is yet to materialise, which may worry some Wolves supporters.

What has Crook said about Moutinho and Wolves?

With Nunes slipping away, Crook thinks Wolves are now likely to put all of their energy into keeping Moutinho.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the talkSPORT reporter said: "I think it's already come out in Portugal that they haven't got the money to do that deal at the moment unless they were to sell Neves.

"I think it's more likely at this stage that they're going to pump money into extending Moutinho's contract and get him tied down to stay for the long haul."

Should Wolves hand Moutinho a new contract?

Absolutely. While he may now be 35 years of age and perhaps past his peak, Moutinho still brings a lot of quality to the pitch.

As per WhoScored, the 145-cap Portugal international had one of the best pass completion rates in Lage's squad last season (86.7%), while he also averaged 3.8 long balls per game, showing his passing range.

Speaking about Moutinho earlier this year, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy said on talkSPORT (via Molineux News): "35 years of age. I think he’s missed five games in three-and-a-half years, which is some going. That’s durability for you. He’s such an intelligent footballer.

"35 years of age, to be playing so consistently at that age in the Premier League week in, week out, it says a lot about the way he looks after himself."

In total, Moutinho made 39 appearances last term, so there is clearly still plenty left in the tank. Therefore, he is undoubtedly a player Wolves should be looking to keep at Molineux this summer.
