Aston Villa: £42.5m forward ‘might come onto the radar’ at Villa Park

Aston Villa could yet make a move for LOSC Lille forward Jonathan David in the current transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The highly-rated 22-year-old is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League and is attracting interest from a handful of sides following an impressive two-year stint in French football.

What is the latest news involving David?

French outlet But! claims that Villa and West Ham United are leading the charge for David’s signature, although they could face extensive competition from several top clubs.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan have also been credited with an interest in the Canada international, but it’s believed his €50 million (£42.5m) price tag is putting them off.

It’s claimed that the Villans and the Hammers are ‘likely to arrive with a big cheque’, and French football journalist Julien Laurens has provided an update on David’s situation.

“The Premier League is his next destination. A lot of big clubs and mid-table clubs have been looking at him. Lille have to sell,” Laurens said when speaking to Sky Sports.

Villa have already brought in Philippe Coutinho, Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara this summer and their spending spree is unlikely to stop there.

What has Jones said about David?

The Midlands outfit were previously linked with a move for former Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez, yet Jones believes David is the ‘profile of player’ they may now look to bring into the club.

He told GiveMeSport: “We know that obviously, they looked at the Luis Suarez situation. But Jonathan David is somebody that might come onto the radar, I’m told.

“That profile of player might be the path that they go down. So, it’s definitely one to look out for because Aston Villa still have spending power in this market.”

Would David be a good signing?

David’s national coach John Herdman dubbed the versatile ace “fearless” following his meteoric rise, and he is continuing to produce outstanding performances on the biggest of stages.

Do you know this obscure Aston Villa footballer from the 1990s?

The 5 foot 11 attacker arrived at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in August 2020 and registered 13 goals and five assists in 48 appearances, helping Lille claim their first Ligue 1 title in 10 years.

And despite Les Dogues slipping to a midtable finish last time out, David still found the back of the net on 19 occasions in the same number of outings, proving his form was no flash in the pan.
