McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has given a potential timeframe on when we might find out who will be driving for the team in their Formula E debut season next campaign.
McLaren announced on Monday a strategic partnership with NEOM at their HQ as they unveiled the liveries for their Extreme E and Formula E cars, ahead of entries to both championships in the coming months.
However, whilst we know the Extreme E driver line-up will be Emma Gilmour and Tanner Foust, there’s, as yet, been no announcement on their FE line-up.
Recently, McLaren announced the renewal agreement of Felix Rosenqvist, a driver who knows the series well, and there’s naturally a suggestion he could be part of the FE team but, speaking at the launch on Monday, Brown suggested that he could still remain in IndyCar and that a decision is still yet to be made.
“I would anticipate around the summer break,” Brown said when asked by Give Me Sport’s George Dagless on when we’ll get definitive news.
“We’ve signed Felix and we’re undecided which of our race cars he is going to go into.
“He’s unique in that he’s won in Formula E and in IndyCar and we’re trying to put the best line-ups in across all of our driver rosters so really where Felix will go will depend on what other IndyCar driver we can or can’t get or what other Formula E driver we can or can’t get.
“We’re in a great position with Felix and we’re confident, as he has done, he can win in either so we’re like ‘let’s lock him down and then let’s see who’s the best other Formula E or best other IndyCar driver we can get.'”
McLaren have a number of options available to them, and both their IndyCar and, of course, Formula E teams will attract many drivers given the pull of the brand.
It remains to be seen who joins Rosenqvist, though, and all will have to be revealed in the next couple of months.
