Man Utd: 43-cap target has 'reservations' over Old Trafford plans

Erik ten Hag

Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong remains unconvinced about a move to Old Trafford this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The current Barcelona man is enjoying playing for the current head coach in Xavi, who has labelled the midfielder a “genius”, and is uncertain ahead of a potential move to the Premier League this transfer window.

What’s the latest on de Jong?

According to Sky Sports, the 43-cap Netherlands international is edging closer to a move to United for a fee of around £54m.

The move would reunite De Jong with his former manager at Ajax in Erik ten Hag, and would be the Manchester club’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

According to the same report, the deal is not completed yet, but there is a confidence that it will get over the line.

However, Jones suggests that it won’t be an easy task to get de Jong out of the Nou Camp and into Old Trafford.

What has Jones said about de Jong?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s under a coach that totally understands him, so there are various factors that do suit him.

“I believe he’s still got some reservations about how this rebuild is going to work.

“I’m not sure he wanted to be the first piece of the puzzle that comes in but you might have to be in order for those other pieces to then arrive.”

Will Manchester United sign de Jong?

It looks increasingly likely that De Jong will be a Manchester United player come the start of the Premier League season in August, something which is likely to excite fans of the Red Devils.

The 5 foot 11 midfielder made 47 appearances for the Catalan giants last season, scoring four goals and providing five assists, according to Transfermarkt.

The Dutchman has been an effective presence in the middle of the park at the Camp Nou, ranking in the top 5% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues for progressive passes received per 90 minutes (4.74), the top 6% for progressive carries (7.08), the top 8% for pass completion percentage (90.1%), and the top 9% for touches in the opposition penalty area (2.74) according to FBref.

The Netherlands international’s performances across La Liga last season earned him an average SofaScore rating of 7.08, suggesting that he has performed to a consistently excellent standard when called upon by Xavi.

Ten Hag will be looking to rebuild the current squad at Old Trafford and De Jong’s arrival in Manchester may just be the first piece of a puzzle that the club really need to get right.
