Williams made her return to the tennis court at the Eastbourne International last week, ending an injury-enforced year-long break from the sport.
The 40-year-old paired up with Ons Jabeur to play in the doubles tournament, reaching the semi-finals.
She played her first singles match in 12 months at Wimbledon last night, and it ended up being one for the history books.
Williams looked rusty, but her renowned will-power saw her recover from going one set down, before saving a match point in the 12th game of the decider.
But she could not prevent Tan from triumphing in the tiebreak, with the three hour and 10 minute match finishing 7-5 1-6 7-6.
The 24-year-old Tan was making her main draw debut at Wimbledon, and she was certainly well supported in the crowd.

There was one young member of her entourage which particularly caught the attention of viewers on TV. Her relation to Tan is unknown, but the girl was passionately cheering the tennis player on throughout the match, before wildly celebrating as Williams was beaten.
Some viewers even branded the girl the star of the match, despite the scintillating tennis taking place on Centre Court.
One Twitter user posted: “I want someone to cheer for me like the little kid in Harmony Tan’s box”, while another wrote: “The kid bringing the hype in Harmony Tan’s player box 👏👏 😂”.

Others pointed out that it was lucky Tan won the match otherwise the child would have been devastated.
“This kid was the star of the match, haha! 😅 she didn’t stop cheering harmony on, even when it seemed like all hopes were lost. I can’t even imagine how tonight would’ve turned out for her if Harmony Tan didn’t win..lol.”
Tan will now play Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo in the second round tomorrow.
As for Williams, the 23-Grand Slam winner suggested she would continue to train for the US Open in September.
“When you’re at home, especially in New York and that being the place I first won a Grand Slam, it is always special,” she said. “There’s always motivation to get better and play at home.”
