Arsenal could look at 'exciting' 42-goal star after Raphinha blow at Emirates

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta encouraging his players

Arsenal target Cody Gakpo would “fit the bill” for Mikel Arteta at the Emirates Stadium, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Gunners were linked with the PSV Eindhoven winger earlier this year and could revive their interest after Chelsea moved ahead of them in the race for Raphinha.

What’s the latest news involving Gakpo?

Arteta has already added three players to his squad in the shape of Matt Turner, Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira, but he looks set to fall short in trying to make Raphinha his fourth summer addition.

Chelsea have agreed a £55m fee with the Leeds ace, meaning Arsenal might need to move on to other targets.

According to Football.London, the Gunners have been interested in Gakpo since April, although the Netherlands international is wanted by Tottenham and Leeds.

Gakpo flourished for PSV last season, scoring 21 goals across all competitions, which takes his overall tally for the club to 42, while also laying on 15 assists for his teammates.

Dennis Bergkamp - Arsenal

Which year did Dennis Bergkamp leave Arsenal?

He might be just 23-years-old, but Gakpo has already racked up more than 134 appearances for the Dutch giants and O’Rourke reckons that his age and potential could make him an ideal fit for Arteta.

What did O’Rourke say about Gakpo?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m sure they have other players on their list in that position if they can’t get Raphinha.

Gakpo, who’s had a very good season for PSV, looks a very exciting talent, and he would certainly fit the bill for the type of profile that Arteta is looking at.”

Would Gakpo start for Arsenal?

Gakpo is capable of playing anywhere across the front three, including through the middle, but his best position is out on the left.

Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe generally shared the workload on that side last season, and while the young duo both enjoyed good moments, Arsenal need competition and someone with more quality and consistency in hope of edging closer to the Champions League places.

And while Gakpo has never played outside of Holland, he’s proven himself at PSV for the best part of four years with 75 goal contributions in 134 appearances since making his debut.

The flying winger has also had a regular taste of European football, playing more than 35 times in the three continental competitions, which bodes well for the Gunners, who are back in the Europa League next season.
