DK Metcalf: Peter Schrager drops big claim about Seahawks receiver's future

DK Metcalf of the Seattle Seahawks

NFL reporter Peter Schrager has dropped an interesting claim about the Seattle Seahawks and their wide receiver DK Metcalf.

The Seattle Seahawks are very much in rebuilding mode right now under head coach Pete Carroll. Long gone are the days of the ‘Legion of Boom’ defence that helped guide them to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances back in 2013 and 2014, winning the first one, as last season they finished a rather disappointing 7-10 and 4th in the NFC West. This after having never finished lower than 2nd between 2012-2020.

The rebuild was further evidenced by their trade of franchise quarterback Russell Wilson this past offseason with the Denver Broncos, possibly the biggest indicator that they were blowing the whole thing up and starting again.

One other option that could have been available for them in order to get more picks would have been to trade star wide receiver D.K Metcalf, with many media outlets discussing the idea during the offseason, because with what he’s been able to do, he certainly could have brought in a pretty penny.

Metcalf tears it up in Seattle

After being taken with the #64 pick in the 2nd round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Metcalf has gone about becoming one of the more dominant receivers in the league. He has so far put up 3,170 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns, never failing to fall below 900 yards in each of his three seasons so far in the league.

This is all of course helped by his incredible frame, with the 24-year-old listed at 6’4 and 235lbs that makes him an almost impossible matchup against the vast majority of defensive backs in the National Football League.

So it’s fair to say he would be a valuable commodity. However according to Peter Schrager, he doesn’t seem to think a move away from Lumen Field is on the offing any time soon.

What’s he said?

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show as part of a wider topic about wide receivers around the league, Schrager discussed the options that the Seahawks had for Metcalf, and that he actually expected the 24-year-old to try and negotiate his contract sooner rather than later before the 2022 NFL season kicks off:

It certainly is an interesting claim from Schrager, especially his point about wanting to get it done before a possible production drop off post-Wilson, and if his assessment of the timescale is right, then it could very well be one to keep an eye on as the season approaches.
