Who remembers when England players did the Mannequin Challenge in an international friendly against Spain at Wembley? The viral internet craze didnât last particularly long at the back-end of 2016, but Englandâs players amused fans with their attempts during a 2-2 draw against the 2010 world champions.Adam Lallana and Jamie Vardy scored for England, putting the Three Lions 2-0 up early in the second half, but late goals from Iago Aspas and Isco denied Gareth Southgate victory in his fourth and final game as interim manager.Southgate stepped into the managerâs role after Sam Allardyce was sacked after just 67 days and signed a permanent contract with the FA two weeks after the Spain game. The Mannequin Challenge was all the rage on social media at the time and Englandâs players couldnât resist giving it a go against La Roja. After Lallana scored from the penalty spot in the ninth minute, only one of Englandâs players actually remembered to do it: goalkeeper Joe Hart.Fan-recorded footage showed Hart standing like a statue while the rest of his teammates celebrated at the opposite end of the pitch.Watch it here:
Bit awkward.
Hart must have reminded his teammates at the half-time interval because the rest of the players were seen doing it after Vardyâs 48th-minute goal.
Check it out:
And Hart, clearly a huge fan of the internet trend, showed his appreciation for Vardyâs efforts after the striker was subbed off for Marcus Rashford in the 67th minute.
Yep, 2016 was a far more innocent time.
Just imagine Englandâs players bringing the Mannequin Challenge back for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.
