Newcastle: £60m 'machine' would be 'dream signing' at St James Park

Newcastle United can make a “real statement signing” by landing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer, says journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Reports in Italy suggest the Tyneside club are keen on the 23-year-old as Eddie Howe looks to bring in a new forward.

What is the latest news involving Osimhen?

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Newcastle have made it clear that they are prepared to make another move to sign Osimhen.

The same outlet claims that the Magpies attempted to sign the Nigerian, who is valued at £60m by the CIES Football Observatory, back in January and will try again this transfer window.

The 2021/22 campaign was a good one for Osimhen, who scored 18 goals in 32 appearances for Luciano Spalletti’s side.

Considering that, Napoli will not want to lose their talisman and risk regressing, with the Italian outfit finishing third in Serie A last term.

What has O’Rourke said about Osimhen and Newcastle?

O’Rourke thinks Osimhen would be a huge signing for Newcastle, describing the Nigeria international as one of the top strikers in Europe.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “Dream signing. It would be a real statement signing. We’re still really to see a huge marquee signing for Newcastle since the change of ownership, obviously did some good business in January and doing some good deals this summer as well.

“But someone like a Victor Osimhen would be a marquee signing because he’s probably among the top strikers in Europe right now with a host of clubs chasing his signature.”

Would Osimhen be a good addition to Newcastle’s squad?

He would be more than that. As O’Rourke put it, Osimhen arriving at St James’ Park would be huge.

Over the last year, the former Lille man has ranked in the 96th percentile for non-penalty goals, the 96th for total shots and the 90th for touches in the box among strikers (via FBref), so he is quite clearly a dangerous No.9.

Valentino Lazaro - Newcastle United

Do you know this obscure player Newcastle signed in the January transfer window?

Speaking about him last year, football writer and pundit Mina Rzouki hailed him as a “machine”, while Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret has called his team-mate a “great player”.

“A great player, he still has to improve in some aspects,” Meret told Il Napolista (via Soccernet) in April. “But he has enormous potential. He is giving us a lot, but he can help us even more because he has unique and impressive qualities.”

If Newcastle can acquire a footballer of Osimhen’s calibre, then that really would be a statement.
