Newcastle United could decide to challenge West Ham for Armando Broja's signature this summer, believes journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Chelsea striker has been heavily linked with a move to the London Stadium, but O'Rourke reckons he is a player the Magpies want as well.

What is the latest news involving Broja?

According to a report from JOE, Chelsea offered Everton Broja, who they value at £35m, plus cash on Wednesday night as they tried to make a late swoop for Richarlison.

Had that proposal been accepted, it would have likely annoyed West Ham, with the 20-year-old thought to be one of their top targets this summer.

Prior to the above, Sky Sports claimed that the Hammers were readying a £30m bid for Broja.

Elsewhere, it has been reported that Newcastle are also eyeing the Albanian, who they see as an alternative to Reims forward Hugo Ekitike.

What has O'Rourke said about Broja and Newcastle?

O'Rourke thinks Broja is a player who is on Newcastle's shortlist right now and can see them going head-to-head with West Ham for his signature.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: "I'm sure Broja does figure on Newcastle's wish-list if they are to bring in a new striker because you don't get too many good young players who might be available this summer, and Broja fits that bill.

"I'm sure Newcastle might be thinking maybe we should be coming in to compete with West Ham for his signature."

Why has Broja become a target for Newcastle?

As alluded to earlier, Newcastle are having trouble with signing Ekitike, forcing manager Eddie Howe to consider other forward options.

Broja is the same age as the French youngster and has a lot of talent, so he could be a very good alternative.

Discussing the Albania international earlier this year during his loan spell at Southampton, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was quoted saying (via Daily Echo): "Armando is getting better and better.

"He is a very unique player with very unique strengths in his game - his speed and robustness. And he is a goalscorer."

Last season, Broja made 38 appearances for the Saints so, having got a real taste of senior football in England, he may not want to return to Chelsea to just sit on the bench.

Considering that, there could be a real chance for Howe to bring the No.9 to St James' Park, though it looks like he will have to see off competition from West Ham.
