Reporter suggests Trey Lance has 'grown leaps and bounds' for 49ers this offseason

Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers

NFL reporter Peter Schrager has offered an interesting claim surrounding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance.

This season looks as if it is set to be the coming-out party for Trey Lance. After the San Francisco 49ers traded up to get him with the #3 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, last season was a developmental one as he sat behind incumbent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

Despite being the backup for the majority of the season, he was able to get some minutes under his belt during the course of the campaign, throwing for 603 yards, 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions during his 6 games, roughly the numbers that you would expect for a rookie quarterback in a limited capacity.

What is set to happen this summer though is interesting. Do the 49ers stick with Garoppolo and wait for Lance to develop for a little bit longer, or do they make the switch towards the future and insert Lance into the starting role?

What are the 49ers doing?

By all accounts, it seems as if they are leaning towards the latter. A report from reporter Albert Breer claimed that the 49ers are actively looking to trade Garoppolo and have been making an effort to do so for some time, but that issues with his throwing shoulder was putting things into some doubt.

Where do the Pittsburgh Steelers play?

Those doubts should hopefully be removed pretty soon as it has since been reported that Garoppolo is set to begin throwing once again, at which point a move might come to fruition, with the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks all teams that could use a quarterback this summer, for a variety of reasons.

But what would they be left with? A claim from back in May claimed that Lance was leaving a number within the 49ers organisation ‘underwhelmed’ with what they saw in him, which might have given the indication that they wouldn’t be left with all that much should Garoppolo leave.

But according to Peter Schrager, that is far from the case.

What’s he said?

Speaking on the Pat McAfee Show, Schrager explained what the situation was with Garoppolo and his injury before claiming that Lance has come on rather strong in recent months and is certainly looking a lot better than what the previous reports have claimed:

Although these claims should be tempered by the fact that it is still the offseason for Lance and the 49ers, and is going against his teammates rather than any proper sort of competition, and what he looks like when the games count is what really matters.

But it is something that the 49ers are going to have to be incredibly certain of before they make the move to trade Garoppolo, because it will be near impossible to get him back if things don’t go well with Lance.
