UFC legend Daniel Cormier used his UFC Hall of Fame induction speech to admit that the infamous towelgate incident was, in fact, real.

Last night at the UFC Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Daniel Cormier was honoured as part of the 2022 class in front of his fans and peers alike. The 43-year-old achieved some great things throughout the course of his time in mixed martial arts, including becoming a two-weight UFC champion who managed to defend the strap at both heavyweight and light heavyweight.

He defeated some big names throughout the course of his career, including Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, who he submitted on two separate occasions.

However, during the weigh-in for their rematch at UFC 210, Cormier caused a great deal of controversy by seemingly leaning on a towel provided to him by UFC staff in order to make weight.

He’s come out and spoken about the incident on several occasions in the past but on Thursday, in the name of complete honesty, he decided to finally come clean about what really went down in Buffalo.

“I want to tell you something because I feel like right now is the time to be completely transparent. I think I may have grabbed the towel in Buffalo. Rumble, I’m sorry my guy.”

An iconic run

While his time at the top may have come to an end with consecutive defeats to Stipe Miocic, it’s safe to say Daniel Cormier will still be remembered as one of the greatest UFC fighters of all-time.

He was willing to take on all comers with his Jon Jones rivalry serving as one of the most memorable in the history of the sport.

In the wake of his retirement following the Miocic trilogy, Cormier quickly moved into a full-time role as a commentator and an analyst for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Some fans aren’t big supporters of his work behind the commentary table whereas others can’t get enough of him, but regardless of which camp you fall into, there’s no way of denying the impact he’s been able to have at 205 pounds and above.

Towelgate aside, of course.
