Tottenham Hotspur ‘might keep’ defender Sergio Reguilon at the club despite the arrival of Ivan Perisic, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

Spurs could be one of the most active clubs in the transfer market this summer as manager Antonio Conte looks to make his mark on the first-team squad, and Reguilon is one player whose future is in doubt.

What is the latest news involving Spurs?

A report from The Telegraph back in May claimed that Tottenham’s hierarchy were set to promise Conte six new acquisitions ahead of next season in order to keep him happy.

And the north London outfit are making impressive progress in their recruitment drive, having already added Perisic, Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Fraser Forster to their ranks.

However, the focus may now turn to offloading some of their fringe players before they can concentrate on securing their final few acquisitions.

The likes of Steven Bergwijn, Harry Winks, Emerson Royal, Tanguy Ndombele, Bryan Gil and Giovani Lo Celso have been linked with Hotspur Way exits and could be forced to seek pastures new.

What has Bridge said about Reguilon?

Bridge believes any future signings could depend on who Spurs can get out the exit door but reckons Reguilon may still have a role to play under Conte.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think it all depends on outgoings. I think they need to get rid of Ndombele, Lo Celso, one of Royal or (Matt) Doherty, one of (Ryan) Sessegnon or Reguilon, and they’re not going to get rid of Sessegnon.

“Someone said to me earlier and made a good point, they might keep Reguilon and push Perisic forward. So, there's options, but I think Spurs need to look at outgoings a little bit now as well.”

Should Spurs keep hold of Reguilon?

Reguilon arrived at Tottenham from Real Madrid via a £32 million deal back in September 2020, and made an instant impression, racking up six assists in 36 appearances throughout his maiden campaign.

But that figure halved last term as the Spain international battled with Ryan Sessegnon for a regular starting berth in the left wing-back position.

And Reguilon’s underlying numbers indicate why Conte seemed to remain unconvinced over his credentials following his appointment last November.

As per WhoScored, the flying full-back averaged 1.6 tackles, 0.3 blocks and 1.6 clearances per league game last season, placing him outside the top seven for each metric compared to his teammates.

Yet if Conte does plan to use Perisic in a more attacking role, then Reguilon could still be a good option to have, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be first-choice when things get back underway in August.
