Iga Swiatek's remarkable 37-match win streak has come to an end after being beaten by France's Alize Cornet in the third round at Wimbledon.The Polish star’s stunning run of form, which started back in February at the Qatar Open, saw her win the Sunshine Double and her second French Open title.Swiatek had not been defeated since assuming the number one ranking from Ashleigh Barty but Cornet was the deserving victor on Court One –– triumphing in straight sets 6-4 6-2. 

Cornet secures famous win 

32-year-old Cornet has never been ranked inside the world’s top 10 but she is used to causing upsets against the world’s best. 

Back in 2014, the French star famously beat Serena Williams on three occasions. One of these wins came at Wimbledon, where Cornet came back from a set down to hand the American her earliest exit at the tournament since 2005. 

This victory over Swiatek, however, was arguably even better. The Pole had dropped just two sets in 29 matches at one stage, but Cornet broke the 21-year-old three times in the second set. 

“I have no words right now,” Cornet said afterwards. “It reminds me of the moment I beat Serena. I am a huge fan of Iga, she’s such an amazing player and a nice ambassador. This is the kind of match I am training for, it drives me. She feels a little less confident on grass. I guess I like the upset, it’s a really nice feeling now. I need to process.

“In France, they say a good one always ages well and that’s what happened to me. I am playing one of the best seasons of my career. I am still motivated, I have the fire in me. See you in the next round.”

Cornet’s best performance in a major came at this year’s Australian Open, where she reached the quarter-finals. 

This is the second time the world number 44 has reached the last 16 at the All England Club.

Cornet will face Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the fourth round.  

Gauff also knocked out  

Swiatek’s defeat was not the only upset on Saturday as teenager Coco Gauff was defeated by US compatriot Amanda Anisimova. 

Gauff reached the final of the French Open earlier this season and had looked in great touch during her first couple of matches. 

But Anisimova, who was making her centre-court debut, recovered from a set down to wrap up an impressive 6-7 6-2 6-1 win. 

"This is the most special day of my career. It's just a huge privilege to play on this court playing Coco," said Anisimova. 

"She's an amazing player, got to the final of a Grand Slam so I wanted to soak up the moment. Winning is so special, especially in front of a full crowd.

"The worst thing for a tennis player is to lose 7-6 in the first set. I had the same experience in the French Open, but it's important to bounce back and give everything you have.

"Although it was extremely exhausting, I pushed through and was so happy to get the win."
